prem joshua : Product Reviews

Soaring Melodies & Juicy Percussion
"The range of world instrumentation, including an awe-inspiring host of percussion, and all-original tracks guarantee that Desert Visions is as fresh as the dawn wind in the desert.  Joshua's flute and sax create contemporary melodies that soar over the juicy percussion.  The bass, keyboards, and Western drums anchor the songs and allow the sensational world instruments room to play without dominating."

Dance Of Shakti
Full Of Juice & Passion!
Shakti, Shiva' s partner is a very lively and powerful goddess, and Prem Joshua, with his latest release, Dance Of Shakti, has captured this flavor in the CD.  Full of harmony--round, melodious and at times soft and feminine--the music is always full of juice and passion!

Joshua has successfully combined old mantras and interwoven them with the Indian sounds of sitar and the melodies of the bamboo flute.  And this music soon gets you going with the drive of the drum 'n' bass, electronic sounds, and electric guitars.

This album is the meeting of the at-ease-ness of the East with the bubbling liveliness of the West.  Joshua, who lived in India for many years, has learned a lot from his Indian musical masters.  Now he brings back to the West his rich experience with Indian classical music. Here he lets Shakti ride the tiger of fast beats.  No dreamy Indian sounds here, but fresh and fast combinations that shake you awake, and get you ready to take off on any dance floor or disco.  Many of the tracks on Dance Of Shakti invite ecstatic dancing and celebration.

Pieces like Himalaya Trance or Nanak are a real treat, lasting longer than 10 minutes, and positively inviting you to surrender with the trance of the mantras.  Prem Joshua goes far beyond the old musical structures of the Occident and Orient.  This could easily become the next trend in clubs and discos from London to Madrid and New York to Paris.  As far as I know--this is already happening in Delhi and Bombay!

Mudra
Mudra: Dance With Hands
“The word mudra means "hand gesture" in Sanskrit; the mudras are used in the classical Indian dances, where hands are more expressive than words.  They even don't express anything definite, but channel the energy flows.  And one really wants to "dance with hands" to the music of Prem Joshua and his friends. You can express everything by their movements: joy of being, sadness, passion, delight, the most intimate words of love… absolutely everything… And it would be more than all the words.”

Unique East/West Blend
"Joshua, a talented multi-instrumentalist, plays bamboo flutes, sitar, santoor, dilruba, gopichand, swarmandal harp, and tanpura while singing.  Additional musicians contribute keyboards, programming, balaphone, and lots of percussion, including tablas.  The heady result is a unique blend of Eastern and Western musical traditions with some of the best tracks I've heard all year."

Swing To The Glory Of The Universe
At 18, a German student saw Ravi Shankar perform and his life was changed forever; Prem Joshua spent the next 20 years in India, mastering the sitar and learning the traditions of Indian music.

As his own style developed he blended Eastern styles and instruments with Western Jazz forms using the Indian flutes, sax, electronica and tarana-style (wordless) vocals.  With this latest album, Prem Joshua's music has gone one step further into the mainstream, remixed by DJ Science to create a true synthesis of tradition and futurism.

Bringing in the vision of different mixologists, including Cosmic Rocker, Aram Ram and Sean Dinsmore, Prem Joshua's haunting, dreamlike music is transformed into dub, chill and dancefloor masterworks.  This album takes trance inducing, meditative music and adds movement and dance-ability.  The listener is induced to get up, swing and sway to the glory of the universe.  Highly recommended .

Heavenly Blend Of Musical Styles
Terra Incognita's Prem Joshua, a multi-instrumentalist and composer, is a talented man.  Born in Germany into a musical family, he traveled the world searching for the keys to his spirit.  In India he found one and learned to play sitar under the guidance of Ustad Usman Khan.

He has successfully (and beautifully) married his Indian classical training with elements of desert tribal music and jazz.  Moghul Gardens is a gentle ride of a tune using a santoor (Persian hammer dulcimer) for sparkle and a driving tabla behind a fortunately composed array of jazzy flute and saxophone.   Koregaon Morning is a mesmerizing and joyful song, lush and dense with the sound of seven bamboo flutes cushioned by an open soundscape of percussion and bells.  Mango Rain will turn your living room into a mountain top (with excellent weather).

Hamsafar is a heavenly blend of musical styles, perfect for bodywork and yoga, and listening too.  The music between the notes is even better!

Yatri
New ConneXion
This is exquisite music for both the opening of the summer months and the growth of the soul.

YATRI, Prem Joshua's latest release from White Swan Records, was recorded in the summer moons of 2004 during his travels in Europe and America.

The music's heart though is India and the silent beauty of realised meditation. Even as the musicians dig deep to explore funk and jazz music through the album's world fusion format, YATRI is always a journey within. Twenty years of Prem Joshua's travel in India, his time studying with the great teacher Osho and his mastery as a triple instrumentalist of flute, sitar and soprano saxophone are all elements of YATRI's great substance.

It is a CD that is immediately inviting and infinitely replayable. Perhaps the best World Fusion/New Age release of 2005, and with the year not even half over it would be hard to top.
