German-born Deva Premal shares her fabulous voice with sacred Sanskrit mantras. A stellar cast of musicians including the amazing Jai Uttal, Miten and Kit Walker, contribute acoustic grand piano, keyboards, guitar, flute and percussion. Premal chose the title Love Is Space - also her personal mantra - to remind us that love has no barriers or boundaries.
While most of the seven tracks are Hindu mantras, she included Om Mani Padme Hum, a Tibetan mantra, that progresses with passionate joy. Idé Weré Weré comes from the Yoruba people of Nigeria and is dedicated to Ochun, the goddess of love. Liner notes provide all lyrics in both the original language and English, which really helps listeners enjoy the album. One of the finest chant albums of 2000, Love Is Space is a rare gift indeed.

The high chanteuse of chant, Deva Premal, is a pillar of originality in the grand garden of Indian music. You might say she's to Sanskrit Mantras what Enya is to Celtic music. Her smooth soulful voice, which resides in the lower octaves, haunts atmospheric, lightly rhythmic, ethereal soundscapes skillfully crafted by her partner Miten.
Together they take listeners on a journey into the depths of the soul that doesn't forget to stop at the heart. The music's easy on the ears, spiritually provocative and contains enough mass appeal to make even the yoga-phobic stir. Throw in a duet with Jai Uttal (Om Ram Ramaya) and you have an album that will get anyone's chakras in an uproar.

Walkout, a new HBO release that tells the true story of a group of Chicano students who staged a compelling 1968 walkout to protest the injustices of the public high-school system in East Los Angeles, features the mantra "Om Hraum Mitraya" from Deva Premal's Dakshina.
Director Edward James Olmos, who grew up in East Los Angeles and went on to a highly sucessful career as an actor and director, noted at a recent screening of Walkout that things have changed since his days in school, when violence and discrimination against Chicanos was rampant. But he added, "Not enough has changed. We still think there’s such a thing as a Latino race, an African race, a European race," and use that as a cultural determinant, "when there’s only one race: the human race."
The film's emotional climax uniquely illuminates this theme by using Deva Premal's rendition of the ancient Sanskrit mantra, "Om Hraum Mitraya", from her album Dakshina. Like Walkout, this mantra's message of friendship and respect implores us to realize that we are all one community, one family. That the theme of "Om Hraum Mitraya" so closely matches that of Walkout makes it an obvious choice for inclusion in the film. That Edward James Olmos selected a Sanskrit mantra for a film focused on Chicano issues highlights the universal principles inherent in each.
