What’s music for yoga doing in the drumming section? Well, to paraphrase an old card ad, this is not your mother’s yoga music! Composed/performed/produced by DJ Free, kis keyboards, Native flute, and distinctive chanting flow along grooves laid down by master percussionist Brent Lewis.
According to the liner notes, this CD aims to energize the lower three charkas first and foremost, and the moving body agrees. Guest artists add a touch of sitar to a couple of tracks and a didjeridoo’s earthy insistence to others, and a sprinkling of grand piano notes graces the more meditative ten-minute ending track.
The overall feel is richly layered, a kind of primal naturalness mixed with an edgy urbanity. If one’s style of yoga, dance or movements is highly energetic, this could be the perfect motiviator.
