Shoshan CD by Shye Ben-Tzur is Israeli, Indian, Qawwali world music for peace.
Inspired by the great voices of Sufi devotional music, above all the legendary Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Shoshan weaves devotional poetry, Rajasthani rhythms and modern elements into a celebration of divine love and life.
The project was conceived by Shye Ben-Tzur, an acclaimed Israeli composer, producer and performer who has been living in India for the past decade, studying its rich musical traditions to craft his own unique and welcoming sound. Shye’s music brings together traditional Sufi Qawwali vocal styles with North Indian rhythms, flamenco guitar, brass lines and an east-west percussion mix.
After attending a concert in Israel by the Indian classical musicians Hari Prasad Chaurasia and Zakir Hussain, he became interested in Indian music and traveled to Ajmer, India, Rajasthan’s most important Sufi shrine. There, he trained and collaborated with the local musicians in the study of Qawwali -- a form of ecstatic Muslim devotional music poplularized in the west by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.
He has performed at Sufi festivals around the world and in 2003 released his first album, Heeyam, to great acclaim. Since then, he has expanded his musical vision, collaborating with Rajasthani folk musicians and bridging Qawwali music with his own ancient Hebrew culture to create a wholly unique musical style.
Shoshan is a natural next step in Shye’s exhilarating career, a cross-cultural mix of passions, genres, languages and irresistible beats. He is the Hebrew Qawwali singer of today, spreading a message of love and understanding whereever he goes.
